Etonogestrel (Implanon, Nexplanon, 3-Oxodesogestrel, 3-keto-Desogestrel) is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring female sex hormone progesterone. It binds to the cytoplasmic progesterone receptors in the reproductive system and subsequently activates progesterone receptormediated gene expression.
