The thiol groups can be used to attach a variety of products to the oligonucleotide. Common thiol-reactive groups include maleimides, halogens, iodoacetamides and pyridyldisulfides. This DNA modification is commonly used for the attachment of enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase or alkaline phosphatase.
