Pathogenic Sample Collection Overview

When it comes to the collection of potentially pathogenic samples, there is no “one size fits all” with regards to the device/vehicle used for collection and transport. Zymo Research understands the need for specialized collection devices when working with pathogenic samples. We have designed several application-specific devices that are prefilled with the DNA/RNA Shield™ Reagent to instantly inactivate pathogenic samples and stabilize the genetic content. The pathogenic sample collection devices are perfect for a wide range of applications that include those specific for blood-borne, saliva, mucousal membranes, feces, nose and throat, and environmental pathogens. 

In addition, not all pathogens are created equal (e.g., Gram-positive and negative bacteria, fungus, protozoans, spores, etc.). With this in mind, we have developed collection systems that utilize our ultra-high density BashingBeads™  in combination with the the DNA/RNA Shield™ Reagent to efficiently lyse all pathogens even tough-to-lyse pathogens.

All samples collected in our DNA/RNA Shield collection devices are ready for most downstream purifications and purified DNA/RNA is ready for high-sensitive downstream applications including quantitative PCR analysis , arrays, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and shotgun sequencing.
